In accordance with the Common Core State Standards in English Language Arts, your child is required to write a number of pieces.

Your child will be required to learn and use the writing process (pre-write, first draft, revision, edit, final copy). I will be teaching your child how to write both narrative fictional and informational pieces, such as memoirs, poetry, an animal report, an opinion piece where they have to support their position with details. They will write weekly in a Writing Journal using prompts and/or topics of their choice.
Spelling correctly is an important part of second-grade writing and I will teach them to use many resources such as their own word attack skills, their spelling notebook, their list of words in their language journal, each other, me, and checking their spelling on MS Word. They will be revising (making their writing "sound" better) and editing (spelling, grammar, sentences making sense) with me, initially, and then with partners as we progress through the year.
We do spend a great deal of time in school on these writing pieces. I conference with the students every single day on their writing pieces, usually towards the end of the writing process after they have their first drafts completed. Our writing pieces can run anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks or more in length. I expect the students to work hard on their writing and stay focused, even though there is noise in the classroom due to many collaborations happening in addition to my conferencing.
I do save all the students' writing pieces for their portfolios, so I ask that you please come to parent/teacher conferences so you can see what your child has accomplished in their writing. You will not, otherwise, see these wonderful pieces as they are needed for their final portfolios in June.
During our writing time, I also teach grammar in accordance with the Common Core Standards. I do not allow the children to take these writing pieces home to work on them because second-graders lose them and I never see them again. It is just too much work to lose.
